Kate pulled into the beautifully manicured parking lot of Messina Hof Winery. The building was magnificent, reminiscent of a French country chalet, with a stone-laid round tower in front giving the feeling of a small castle. The grounds were immaculate, and when she stepped inside, she felt as though they were stepping back in time. A beautiful, simpler time when the only thing they had to do was sip wine and converse. It felt exquisite.

Any doubts Kate may have had about seeing Zach again vanished in his warm smile. She felt immediately comforted and exhilarated. He ushered her to a table he had already chosen and she sat down to enjoy the first tasting of the day.

“I took the liberty of making a departure from our red flights and instead thought we would try out their Rieslings,” Zach said, proudly holding up the tasting card so she could see that the flight was titled: “Give me one good Riesling.”

“Perfect,” Kate said. “I’ll take two!” They laughed together, and she already felt bubbly and warm before the wine even arrived.

“I have been thinking all night about your life,” Zach said, taking Kate by surprise.

“Really?”

“Yes. The fact that you have already lived such a full life, and how brave you are to continue to try new things.” Kate felt herself blushing and hid her nose in the wineglass until she recovered. “You are such an inspiration. I wish my daughter could meet you. I feel like she’s struggling with her own identity right now and she could use a positive role model.”

Kate raised her eyebrow and said, “Well, I really appreciate that. I’ve never felt like a role model for anyone. Tell me about her.”

Zach settled into his seat and got this faraway, sweet look on his face as he thought about his daughter. “Chloe,” he said softly, smiling. “She is such a beautiful girl. Smart. Talented. But she’s struggling with being a teenager right now. Unfortunately, that means she’s not too happy with her mother, and is testing her boundaries left and right.”

Kate nodded, remembering her own teenage years and how focusing on dance was her saving grace. “Does she have hobbies? Sports?”

He smiled. “She loves to read. In fact, that’s all she wanted for Christmas—a big stack of books that she could read over the break.”

Kate laughed. “Well, I think Chloe and I would get along just fine.”

He nodded in agreement before adding, “Her mother would like her to be more socially active. Her mother is part of the country club set and was in a sorority in college. Her feeling is that Chloe will never meet her future husband if she doesn’t join more groups and put herself out there.”

Kate gasped. “Wow! Preparing for a future husband at such a young age?”

“My ex-wife is part of a family steeped in history and entrenched in the local architectural scene,” Zach said. “There are a lot of rules and expectations, one being that Chloe is expected to find a suitor within the appropriate society circles.
